Brian Motley  was well respected and one of the longest serving members of the Parish Council.

He was also actively involved in church affairs along with his wife Beryl, and was a trustee of the Eleemosynary charity which is designated for relief of poverty for the Elderly and making grants for individuals of the Parish  of Saint Bartholomew at times of need.

As land owner of the majority of roadside

ditches and hedges in the Parish he

spent many hours every year keeping the

se well maintained which proved

beneficial  for the general appearance

of the village, at the same time doing

voluntary work on the churchyards and cemetery hedges.

A replacement volunteer will be hard to find.

His practical knowledge of the history of the village which he derived at first hand from his immediate ancestors proved enlightening to us all, some of which will hopefully be maintained with the passing of time.

He bore his illness with great courage and dignity, and will be greatly missed.

Brought to you by Covenham Parish Council

January 2010

Eleemosynary Charity.

The Eleemosynary dinner held at The Millhouse Restaurant was a

resounding success this year due to Fred and Pat putting on a great meal which everyone enjoyed, they also showed great generosity in not charging the Eleemosynary for last minute cancelations saving the charity’s money from being wasted.

However, the meal was surprisingly well attended considering there seemed to be some confusion this year with a flyer going out from The New Plough offering Senior Citizens a free meal on the same day at the same time.

Had the Eleemosynary known that Batemans would provide a free

Christmas meal for the Senior Citizens of our village, it could have saved using precious charity funds.

That said, the Eleemosynary trustee's would like to thank Mrs Tina Alex and Mrs Janice Payne for their hard work organising the dinner at The

Millhouse Restaurant on their behalf, which was made considerably harder by the confusion and last minute cancelations.

Parish council

A Parish Council meeting was held on 4th January 2010.

Among the things dealt with were the several letters of complaint from Councillor Aldridge regarding policies which have been amended since his resignation from the Council two years ago.  This was the third meeting that has been dominated with criticisms of this kind from Councillor Aldridge since his recent co-option back onto the Council.

It was decided that the Parish Precept (the amount you pay in your Council Tax bill) should not be raised thanks to good management of parish funds by the Parish Council and very good accounting by our previous parish clerk Mrs Jean Harness.

Quotes are to be sought for grass cutting in both redundant churchyards and around the village signs.

Pinfold signs are to be erected at two locations in the village.

The Parish Council wishes to thank E.L.D.C. for clearing footpaths and the Police for controlling traffic at the funeral of Cllr. Brian Motley.

Salting of Pear Tree Lane has been done during recent inclement weather, although this is still only a temporary arrangement.  The objective of having this road included in the permanent salting route is being pursued.

A vacancy has arisen for Co-option of a Parish Councillor, preferably from St. Mary but not essential.

Date of next meeting Monday 1st March 2010

Be a responsible dog owner.

It has been brought to the attention of the parish council that there are several dog owners allowing their dogs to foul the verges and footpaths without clearing up after them, in particular around Grange Lane and Birketts Lane. You are reminded that this is an offence with a maximum penalty of £1000. The parish council will be  putting up signs reminding  owners to clear up after their pets.

NEW – Covenham Book Club

If you enjoy reading and socialising why not join the new Covenham Book Club?

I hope to start a monthly Book Club in the village. We would meet in the Parish rooms and share tea/coffee and talk about a book we have all read during the month. Everyone will select a title they would like to share and we will hopefully have some interesting discussions sparked by what we have read!

If you are interested please let me know.
